Red Dress Gala
As a society, we often associate cardiovascular disease with men, however many people do not realize that cardiovascular disease is just as common in women. In fact, two out of three women have one or more of the major risk factors that could eventually lead to heart disease, and this is the leading cause of death amongst Canadian women.
The Alpha Phi Foundation has made it one of their missions to raise money for heart institutes across the United States and Canada in order to assist in raising awareness and supporting research for women’s cardiovascular disease.
In March 2014, Alpha Phi installed a chapter at the University of Ottawa, the Iota Upsilon chapter. As we continue to learn and grow as a sorority, our chapter is integrating itself into the full Alpha Phi experience. This includes tackling one of the biggest philanthropic Alpha Phi events, the Red Dress Gala.
Our first ever annual Red Dress Gala was held on March 14th, 2015 and we were able to fundraise over $1,200. At our second Red Dress Gala, we raised the bar and surpassed the previous year’s donations, attendance, as well as overall funds raised! Continuing to raise the bar for ourselves is a goal we strive to achieve with each future Red Dress Gala!
Being involved with the Alpha Phi foundation, we work closely with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. The money we raise during events is gifted to the institute, and sisters also seek out other opportunities there, such as decorating their office and tree during the holidays! Year-round however, Alpha Phi sisters like to proudly show their support for women's cardiac health by sporting red sorority apparel.
