Our Executive Board
Within Alpha Phi at the University of Ottawa, there are various offices that can be held. Skills and talents of all varieties can be utilized in these numerous positions. The executive committee includes positions that are elected (voted-in by the chapter) as well as appointed positions. To be chosen for the latter, sisters apply and are selected by the executive team. Both elected and appointed positions contribute to sisters’ leadership development. Additionally, joining the executive team is a great way to get involved and give back to the chapter!
In 1872, ten women at Syracuse University in New York founded the Alpha chapter of the Alpha Phi Fraternity. Disappointed by the limited opportunities for women to become involved on campus, these women founded what would today become a sisterhood of 170 chapters. Alpha Phi became an international fraternity in 1906 when it expanded into Canada with the Xi chapter at the University of Toronto. In 2014, the Iota Upsilon chapter at the University of Ottawa was established.
Alpha Phi sisters are bound by common ideals we all strive toward. These include sisterhood, scholarship, philanthropy, leadership, loyalty as well as character development. As sisters, we strive to embody these values in all fundraising, volunteering and social activities.
Alpha Phi symbols were establishment as early as 1872, but all of them are still very dear to our hearts; they are everyday objects that remind us of Alpha Phi values. Sisters proudly bear their crest and badge, for example, and stand alongside the many other sisters who do the same around the globe.
